HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) is the most important blood test for diabetes. Instead of showing your sugar level at one moment, it reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months. That makes it ideal both for diagnosing diabetes and prediabetes and for checking how well diabetes treatment is working.
At HWP Diagnostic the HbA1c test costs ₹649, needs no fasting, and can be collected at home.
How HbA1c works
Sugar (glucose) in your blood sticks to haemoglobin inside red blood cells. The higher your average sugar, the more haemoglobin becomes "glycated". Because red blood cells live for about 120 days, the HbA1c percentage gives a weighted average of your sugar control over the previous few months.

HbA1c normal range
| HbA1c | Category | Approx. average glucose |
|---|---|---|
| Below 5.7% | Normal | Below ~117 mg/dL |
| 5.7% – 6.4% | Prediabetes | ~117–137 mg/dL |
| 6.5% or above | Diabetes | ~140 mg/dL and above |
For most adults with diabetes, doctors aim for an HbA1c below 7%, but the target is individualised - it may be higher for elderly people or those prone to low sugars.
HbA1c vs fasting blood sugar
A fasting blood sugar (₹99) shows your sugar after an overnight fast on that particular morning. It can be affected by a late dinner, stress or illness. HbA1c smooths out these day-to-day swings. Doctors often use both together, along with a post-meal (PP) sugar, to get the full picture.
Diabetes is diagnosed when fasting sugar is 126 mg/dL or higher, or HbA1c is 6.5% or higher, confirmed on a repeat test.
When HbA1c can be misleading
Because HbA1c depends on red blood cells, it can read falsely low or high in anaemia (especially iron deficiency), after blood loss or transfusion, in pregnancy, kidney disease and certain haemoglobin variants. Your doctor will interpret it alongside a CBC and your glucose readings.
Who should test HbA1c?
- Adults above 30–35, especially if overweight, as a routine screen.
- Anyone with a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, PCOS or a history of diabetes in pregnancy.
- People with symptoms - excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, slow-healing wounds.
- People with diabetes: every 3 months until stable, then every 6 months.
If you have prediabetes
Prediabetes is a warning, and the good news is that it is often reversible. Losing 5–7% of body weight, walking 30 minutes a day, cutting sugary drinks and refined carbohydrates, and sleeping well can significantly lower the chance of progressing to diabetes. Recheck HbA1c every 6–12 months. Explore our diabetes test packages for a complete sugar, kidney and cholesterol check.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to fast for an HbA1c test?
No. HbA1c reflects your average sugar over the past 2–3 months, so it is not affected by your last meal. You can give the sample at any time of day.
What HbA1c level means diabetes?
An HbA1c of 6.5% or higher, confirmed on repeat testing, is used to diagnose diabetes. 5.7–6.4% indicates prediabetes, and below 5.7% is considered normal.
How often should a diabetic check HbA1c?
Usually every 3 months when treatment is being adjusted or sugars are not at target, and every 6 months when diabetes is stable and well controlled.
